Drink iain gately5/24/2023 At times its philanthropic side has appeared to be in the ascendant, at others the psychopath has been at large. Its equivocal influence over civilisation can be equated to the polar characters of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It is the most controversial part of our diet, simultaneously nourishing and intoxicating the human frame. Gately states in his opening paragraph: "Alcohol is a fundamental part of Western culture. It can't be wished away, as Americans above all should understand, having suffered through Prohibition and its appalling consequences.īetter, instead, to face the inescapable reality and try to understand the many ways in which, over the ages, we have used and abused it, profited and suffered from it, refined it and been changed by it. Those who take the occasional (or more than occasional) drink are likely to enjoy it more than those who do not, but a central theme should be of interest to all: like it or not, alcohol has been and always will be with us, an important part of human history, culture and society. Drink: A Cultural History of Alcohol is thorough, informative, briskly readable and witty. Iain Gately, a British writer who six years ago published Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilisation, now turns his attention to booze, a subject of similar character but considerably larger import. Drink: A Cultural History of Alcohol, by Iain Gately.

Forbidden tabitha suzuma book5/24/2023 Cultural and religious difference maybe, but if the couple were determined enough to go against their families' wishes, they could always run away together. But I quickly realised that (fortunately) in modern-day Britain there are very few - if any - obstacles that could keep a couple in love apart. I wanted the book to be set in contemporary London and I needed the two teens in question to be old enough for their love for each other to be taken seriously. It came down to incest by a process of elimination. I was inspired by the desire to write a tragic love story. I was only able to take the plunge once I had built up confidence in my writing ability through my previous four books. I kept rejecting the idea because I thought there was a good chance the subject matter would never get past the gatekeepers. 1.) How did you come up with the idea for Forbidden?Ĭonsensual incest was a subject I had wanted to write about for a number of years.

The scum manifesto5/24/2023 You’ve got to go through a lot of sex to get to anti-sex, and SCUM’s been through it all, and they’re now ready for a new show they want to crawl out from under the dock, move, take off, sink out.” -Valerie Solanas “Unhampered by propriety, niceness, discretion, public opinion, ‘morals’, the respect of assholes, always funky, dirty, low-down SCUM gets around. Humor such as this is a muscle, a weapon… It was the truth, and the truth is so absurd it’s painful.” -Michelle Tea The truth of the world as seen though Valerie’s eyes is patently absurd, a cosmic joke. “To see the SCUM Manifesto’s humor, to let it crack you up page after page, is not to read it as a joke. This is an update of the essential AK Press edition, with a new foreword. Shifting fluidly between the worlds of satire and straightforward critique, this classic is a call to action-a radical feminist vision for a different world. “Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation, and destroy the male sex.”įirst circulated on the streets of Greenwich Village in 1967, the SCUM Manifesto is a searing indictment of patriarchal culture in all its forms.

You make decisions, move on, deal cope with it. This sits so well with the portrayal of teenagers because life isn’t always analysed and discussed in minute detail – I think adults are more prone to that – life happens, things happen. Cinnamon Rain didn’t take me long to read as I couldn’t put it down! Intriguing, heartfelt and eloquently written, I loved it.īeautifully told in verse which achieves the effect of minimalism, of making each line, each word, count. This stunning début novel from Australian author Emma Cameron is perfect for the YA audience.

Kristin hannah the four winds5/24/2023 Hundreds of acres of harvested wheat fanned out in all directions, a sea of rough burnished gold, with the homestead part taking up a few acres in the middle of it all.Ī driveway cut through the fields, a brown ribbon of dirt bordered by cottonwoods and fencing. What time did these people waken? It was only nine.Įlsa stepped out onto the porch and saw the Martinelli farm in full sunlight. Dishes drying on the counter attested to the fact that Elsa had slept through breakfast. The kitchen-a bright yellow wallpapered room with gingham curtains and white linoleum flooring-was empty. Her stomach grumbled, reminding her she hadn’t eaten since yesterday’s lunch. She slipped into her plainest day dress, a charcoal-gray with pearl buttons and lace at the collar, then pulled up her stockings and stepped into the black heels she’d worn yesterday. She was a town girl what did she know about life on the land? All she’d brought were crepe dresses and silk stockings and heels. Last night, as she’d unpacked, she’d realized how wrong her clothes were for farm life. She went to the washstand and splashed lukewarm water on her face, then she brushed her teeth and combed her hair. She didn’t want to reveal her weakness to this new family. Better to cry at night when no one could see. Fine strands were stuck to her cheek she’d cried in her sleep.

Gideon the ninth gideon5/24/2023 'Gideon the Ninth' is too funny to be horror, too gooey to be science fiction, has too many spaceships and autodoors to be fantasy, and has far more bloody dismemberings than your average parlor romance. Gideon Nav - orphaned girl, ward of the Ninth House, smart and mean and bad-ass from shades to bones - lives in that line. All the weird, all the violence, all the rebellious snark and darkness live in that one line. The opening line of Tamsyn Muir's debut novel, Gideon the Ninth, is, in effect, a primal distillation of everything that comes after. No, it's a line that lurks a little bit further back in the pack that mocks its betters under its breath and slinks right into your brain to let you know exactly what you're in for. It can't compete with punchier, pithier, more highly polished openers, but who would want to? That isn't a front-row line. It's not at the top because it's a little weird, a little long, a little clunky and oddly punctuated. In the Eternal Record of great opening lines, that one is. In the myriadic year of our lord - the ten thousandth year of the King Undying, the kindly Prince of Death! - Gideon Nav packed her sword, her shoes and her dirty magazines, and she escaped from the House of the Ninth.

Over the years I have managed to collect five of her books, and read 2 others (courtesy the library). After that I kept an eye out for anything else by Erma, at that stage (in the late 1980’s) she had published 8 books but they were difficult to find in Australia. In fact I think it was probably the first book that actually made me laugh out loud. I hadn’t really read anything by a humourist before and I wasn’t expecting to find much in a book written by an old (from my perspective), American housewife amusing but I did. I’m not sure how old I was when I stumbled across one of Erma Bombeck’s books, The Grass Is Always Greener over the Septic Tank, in a second hand bookstore though I think I was maybe in my mid teens. Status: Read from June 01 to 02, 2013 - I own a copy Title: The Erma Bombeck Collection: The Grass Is Always Greener over the Septic Tank If Life Is a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?
